Looking for Landscaping in Danbury CT?The Danbury Review interviews Corby Hocker, The owner of The Grounds Guys of Danbury. The Grounds Guys offer lawn maintenance, and full service landscaping to the local Danbury area including Southbury, Brookfield, Bethel, Newton, Sandy hook and more. Corby had a very interesting story as he was traveling the world as an investment banker not too long ago. He had been doing landscaping as a hobby his entire life, but only recently did he take his passion for the outdoors and turn it into a reality. Being an investment banker meant much time away from his family, and even less time outdoors. Nowadays, he's a The Grounds Guys franchisee, and spends his time building a business he loves. Corby can be found planting shrubs, gardens, perennials, annuals, trees, and cleaning up after storms. When he's not caring for his clients throughout the Greater Danbury area you'll be able to find him on the soccer field, basketball court or skating around the hockey rink with his energetic four kids! When did you start the Grounds Guys of Danbury?I started The Grounds Guys in March of last year, and we're growing rapidly with the help of our team. Becoming a part of The Grounds Guys was one of the best choices I've ever made. The Grounds Guy's core values were right in line with mine, and the franchise provides a ton of support including the back office, marketing and brand recognition. Cara McArdle joined The Grounds Guys team as a Design & Marketing expert, both graphical and garden design. She's equally skilled in creating our marketing materials and designing/installing flower and vegetable gardens for our clients. We've recruited some great people over the past year that do landscaping, tree work and lawn maintenance, but are always looking for hard workers who have a passion for providing high quality service. What's the toughest thing you went through then opening the Grounds Guys of Danbury?Hiring the right people isn't the easiest thing to do. The weather isn't always sunny and warm, and the days aren't always short. We have high requirements for our employees including drug testing. The hardest thing for us was finding good help. Today's new culture is different, and hard workers are definitely hard to come by. But I feel great about the team I have, know they have the same values for quality service that I do, and we are ready for spring. If a customer was looking for landscaping in Danbury and had to choose between the Grounds Guys and 3 other businesses just like it - why choose yours? The customer service that The Grounds Guys is able to give to each and every customer. There are a lot of landscaping services around, but not many that have a standard of service required by a parent company. Those standards combined with my own personal commitment to building a trusted, reliable, high quality landscaping business are what set us apart. You know when a uniformed, scheduled Grounds Guy landscaper comes to your home you can expect a very high standard of service. We do everything from lawn care to tree removal. The reviews on our Facebook page confirm that. Every customer matters. If there is a rain or other delay the customer is notified of that. I do exactly what I say I'm going to do. Superior customer service combined with quality service is the name of my game. Some services sell on price, and you know, you get what you pay for. I focus on the value you get from my services. I want you to feel like the investment was worth it, and it will show in your landscape. That’s what makes me excited to get out there every day. There is plenty of business around the Danbury area, and I know my clients have a choice. When they give the Grounds Guys a chance to meet their home care needs, our clients are happy with the results and continue as our clients. We can’t wait to meet more of our neighbors in the Greater Danbury area and show what the Grounds Guys can do. In 6 months from now, where would you like the Grounds Guys Business to be?Double in size! I'd like us to be at 2 trucks, and 2 full-time crews. There is plenty of business around the Danbury area, and many people are settling for sub-par lawn service. Our team can't wait until the Greater Danbury area realizes what they're missing out on! Wrapping things up with the Grounds Guys of DanburyCorby was a real stand up guy. Learning that he was traveling the world as an investment banker, but changed his whole career around to be able to spend time with his family and work outside was impressive. Making a big career change while needing to support a family is admirable.

Looking for Landscaping in New Fairfield?
I met with David of New Fairfield Landscaping which is a newer landscaping business in New Fairfield, CT. David started New Fairfield Landscaping out of New Fairfield with 10 years of experience with other local landscaping companies in the location Western Connecticut area. New Fairfield Landscaping handles lawn mowing, spring & fall clean up, mulching, hedge trimming, and snowplowing.
New Fairfield Landscaping is looking forward to being able to grow in the local New Fairfield & Danbury community. David explained that "New Fairfield Landscaping services their customers lawns like they service their own." What made you want to get into the Landscaping Business?
I’ve lived in New Fairfield my whole life, and have a ton of experience in the landscaping industry. I wanted to take the next step, and open my own Landscaping business.
What was the toughest part of having a business in 2016?
Keeping all the deadlines. When we get a rain storm that continues for the week it can difficult to find time to do all the accounts. Balancing time with the family while trying to build a business can also be difficult.
If a Customer was to choose between New Fairfield Landscaping and 3 other just like it - why choose yours?
We’re competitively priced. I’m the one that you deal with and I’m the one that does the work. I’ll go the extra mile to make sure you’re taken care of.
Wrapping things up with New Fairfield Landscaping of New Fairfield
Meeting David was very refreshing. He’s a good, honest man with a family and a dream to own his own business. David had a clear vision for his landscaping. Like any local business owner David wants to grow his business, but he wants to make sure to provide the same quality service that his landscaping customers appreciate.
Location: New Fairfield Landscaping 3 Dunham Dr #102 New Fairfield, CT 06812 Phone: (203) 884-8969 Website: www.newfairfieldlandscaping.com Looking for Personal Training in New Fairfield CT?I met with Will from Will Power Fitness in New Fairfield. Will Power Fitness handles all the personal training at Prime Time Fitness located in New Fairfield, CT. Will got his start while training friends & family during his college years for what he refers to as "lunch money". After graduating College he went on to work as a Sports & Fitness Director for a local non-profit. After spending a couple years as a Sports, Fitness & Recreation Director he got married, and wanted to start a family. Will knew that he couldn't start a family in Fairfield County with a non-profit salary. He decided to renew his National Academy of Sports Medicine Personal Training Certification to start training full-time. Will Power Fitness wasn't born just yet. Will started at a local "group personal training" studio called Earthfit. After working there for 10 months he explained that it was time to move on because there wasn't as much growth potential as he was led on to believe there was. He then joined Revive Fitness's branch at World's Gym in Brewster, NY. Within 3 days of working personal training in Brewster a Training Manager spot opened up in New Fairfield. Will made the hard choice to come back to New Fairfield and train within a mile of his previous employer, Earthfit. "It wasn't my ideal situation, but I had to take the promotion for my family's sake," explained Will. Will soon realized that the situation he was in at Revive Fitness wasn't much different than at Earthfit. He was met with constant backlash as he tried to grow the business in different directions. Will stuck with Revive to learn as much as he could about running a personal training business and sales. Instead of repeating the same process Will decided to offer to buy out Revive Fitness. A short few months later... Will Power Fitness was born. What made you want to get into the Personal Training Business?I value helping people. I loved my time working with youth, and always felt better at the end of the day. After having two back to back terrible employers, and decided to run with it myself. I wish I did this earlier. Will Power Fitness is so much different than any other personal training business in New Fairfield, Danbury or even in Connecticut. I had been a die-hard Crossfit Junkie for years, and loved the community that they had created. Taking what I've learned at in Crossfit classes, personal training conferences, and knowing exactly how NOT to setup a personal training business gave me a real plan to follow. I knew after working at Revive Fitness that I didn't want to have crazy contracts. I wanted to seal my personal training clients with a handshake instead of a lawyer-ed up piece of paper. I wanted to give all my nutritional information up for free instead of charge for it. Most of all I wanted to do things my way, and give people the results that they pay for. What's the toughest thing that you went through when opening Will Power Fitness? One thing is for sure, my previous employer Earthfit. She wasn't too keen on me opening up a Personal Training business of my own right next door to hers. In fact, her sister wrote bad reviews on my social media pages. She slammed me on her facebook right after I left which was expected, because that's how it is in the personal training world. I can't even tell you the half the grief I got from my previous employer, Earthfit. I got phone calls about my website that I couldn't say this, or I couldn't say that. I'd get letters from her lawyer threatening me not to violate my non-disclosure agreement. Heck, I'll probably get some crap for this participating in this review! That's no problem though, because I know if you've got haters than you're doing something right! If a customer was to choose between Will Power Personal Training, and 3 other businesses just like it - why choose yours? You get me! That is the number one reason. Will Power Fitness combines many different aspects of training into one comprehensive 1 on 1 training program. You've got a dynamic warm up that specifically targets the weak & inhibited muscles with activation while stretching the over-active muscles. Following the warm up you've got a 45 minute personal training session with me. I'm a total form nazi! We'll have your exercise technique down pat within the first month of personal training. Whether you'd like to lose weight, gain muscle, trim, tone or all the above with Will Power Personal Training we'll achieve all of that and more. Little do you know, but during the training session I'll be employing behavior modification techniques to change your habits, mindset, and empower you to be the best version of yourself. After our training session we'll do mobility to further stretch those over-active muscle groups, and allow you to recover from our workout session. I've been to Crossfit, worked at "Group Personal Training" studios, and I can tell you with confidence that there is not another program like Will Power Personal Training. We give it all to you, the corrective exercise, powerful workouts, behavior coaching, and mobility infused cool downs. One thing was missing from Will Power Fitness however... The community. The reason bootcamps, crossfits, and other group personal training gyms are so effective is that they instill a cult-like atmosphere. I'm not saying Cult in a bad way. I totally drank the cool-aid while I was throwing 275 pounds over my head at Crossfit. However, after reading extensively about behavior modification, habit creation, and psychology I realized that being part of a group was one of the biggest factors to secure positive behavior change. So now I offer a kettlebell class which is free for all my personal training clients. The Kettlebell class meets on friday's at 6:15am, and 7:15am and so far I've received great feedback about it. Wrapping things up with Will Power Fitness of New FairfieldWill's lengthy story about the origins of Will Power Fitness was certainly interesting. He gives a lot to his clients, and enjoys what he does immensely.
Will Power Personal Training CT 3 Dunham Drive New Fairfield, CT 06812 Looking for a Handyman in Ridgefield, Wilton or Weston CT? I met with Al of Handyman Pro of Fairfield County who handles handyman work throughout Ridgefield, Wilton, Weston and the rest of Fairfield County. He was in the trades industry for the 30 years, building new homes, fixing older homes, and restoring almost everything. Having 30 years of experience in the industry I knew that I could do right on every handyman job I received. Helping people in the community is a great feeling, and people really appreciate the fair price I give them. What was the toughest thing about opening your Handyman Business in the Ridgefield, Wilton and Weston Areas? Although I’ve lived in Ridgefield, Connecticut all my life the hardest thing about opening my Handyman business was getting my name out there. I could tell you a hundred things that weren't hard! Now that Pro Handyman Pro of Fairfield County is off the ground the only thing that can be difficult is scheduling. I try to be as flexible as possible when it comes to timing my jobs, but sometimes jobs can take longer than expected. If a customer was to choose between your Handyman Business, and 3 others just like it – why choose Handyman Pro of Fairfield County? I’ve been in the trades for what seems like a million years, and I’ve seen it all. I’ve got the utmost confidence that I’ll be able to handle a job faster, and better than any other Handyman in the business. There are a ton of people in the Handyman niche nowadays. A lot of them have gotten their start because of fixing things around their own house so they figure they could do it for others while making a couple bucks. Handyman Pro of Fairfield County is different. I’ve been in the trades for the last 30 years, and moved into the handyman industry to help the local community. It’s hard finding a fair price these days. I get a ton of repeat customers, and referrals because of my honest pricing. Wrapping things up with Handyman Pro of Fairfield
Looking for Athletic and Personal Development in CT?I met with Keith Deyo the owner of The EDGE Performance Training located in the Danbury Sports Dome. The EDGE Performance Training works with youth athletes and their families by providing them with the tools and resources to maximize their genetic potential. Their unique training programs provide a three-dimensional scope of training to tap into and develop the body, mind and soul. The EDGE Performance Training located in Danbury CT isn’t anything like just seeing a personal trainer. They specialize in working athletes both young and old. In order to ensure that every client is a perfect fit they even have a 90-minute qualification process that each athlete must undergo to be accepted into one of their programs. The athletes that are truly committed to outperforming their competition and ready to put in the work on and off the field will do very well in this initial qualification process.
If a customer was to choose between The EDGE Performance Training, and three other athletic training facilities in Connecticut – why choose yours? The results we have had with our youth athletes does the talking. We do very little talking about the success of our athletes and taking all the credit for their success. We allow the athlete to shine and look forward to seeing them reach their goals and dreams. Being able to provide development mind, body, and soul while at the same time really getting to know our clients and their families sets us apart from other programs in our area. A high percentage of our scholastic athletes often become Captains of their sports teams at school, excel in their classes with 3.5+ GPAs, and set huge goals each year to accomplish both physically and mentally. Personal development has become a huge part of our training, and we expect our clients to be committed to succeed both on the field, in their community and in the classroom. Our facility is a low risk high reward environment that breeds excellence while attracting some of the area’s most talented, hard working, committed, well rounded youth athletes and their families. Training the body, mind, and soul is the key to having a huge impact all year long with our athletes. Follow us on Twitter @successct or find us on Facebook @TheEDGEPerformanceTraining or Instagram @The_EDGE_Performance to see our testimonials. If you had to start over from Day 1 – What would you have done differently? I would have focused 100% in my business rather than spending the first few years doing it part time. Getting a dedicated facility was the key to our growth. I wish I could go back as an athlete because at age 32 I was already 3 knee surgeries in, and told I could never play sports again. That’s not where I saw myself at that stage in life. I was wired for sport and competition and looked forward to being very active every day. All of the banging on my body throughout my childhood and as a 3 sport collegiate athlete had finally caught up. That was tough, as a youth athlete I would of loved to have a facility like ours to train in. I also wish I had someone take the time to show me how important personal development and building up my mind was when I was growing up. Physically we are all limited, but mentally we are all unlimited. Mindset is the difference between the goods and the greats; the greats are mentally focused and willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want. Wrapping it up with Keith of The EDGE Performance Training in Danbury CT I had never actually been in the Danbury Sports Dome until my interview with Keith of The EDGE Performance Training. They’ve got an amazing facility there. The turf they use is low impact, and makes a huge difference for any athletes training directly on it. Keith speaks about his training system with such conviction and energy that you can easily tell that this is a true passion for him.
The EDGE Performance Training 25 Shelter Rock Ln Danbury, Connecticut (203) 207-9991 Website: www.SpeedTrainingCT.com Looking for a Tree Service in Danbury CT?I met with Bill of the Danbury Tree Service Pros. He's got two tree work crews, and a lot of history in the tree service industry. Bill has been working with his hands since the young age of 15, and personally supervises every tree removal that his tree service handles. Bill has been in the Tree Business for over 20 years, and has seen it change from a tight knit group of professionals to a much larger and less professional group. After the storms of Irene and Sandy there have been tree services popping up on every corner in Danbury. This influx of "Tree Removal Experts" has created a bad name for the tree care industry, and resulted in a common distrust of tree care professionals. Bill knows that it won't be easy to improve the name behind tree services in Danbury, but he's devoted to changing people's minds one tree job at a time.
If a Customer was to choose between L & T Tree Service, Barts Tree Service, and Torcasio Tree Service - why choose yours? We've got nothing bad to say about L & T Tree Service, Bart's Tree Service or Torcasio. Each one of those professionals are great at what they do. Bart's handles some very tricky tree removals throughout Fairfield County as a whole. The guys from Land and Tree are great guys, and they put 100% into every tree removal they do. Torcasio Tree Service has been here almost as long as we have. Tony, the owner of Torcasio is a great guy, and he runs a serious tree work crew. What it really comes down to when choosing the right tree service is price and availability. Bart's Tree Service, L & T, Torcasio Tree Service, and our Tree Service will all do a great job. Each one of us handles tricky tree removals, and other tree work. We don't really know any of the other tree services in town as well as these guys. Do your research, look at each tree service's website, reviews, and make some calls. Compare quotes, and availability. We won't always be the lowest in town, but we'll make sure you get taken care of very quickly. Wrapping things up with the Danbury Tree Service ProsI know who I'll be calling for my next tree removal. Bill is a real stand up guy, and he's answered the previous question much difference than most people do. It was great meeting Bill, and learning about his tree service.
Danbury Tree Pros 42 Lake Ave Ext Ste 159 Danbury, CT 06811 (203) 794-7658 https://www.pinterest.com/danburytreepros https://www.facebook.com/DanburyTreePros Looking for Wedding & Event Design, or Custom Wedding Invitations? I met with Enza and Briana from Enza Events and Pretty in Print who share a space in Ridgefield, CT. It was like I was walking into my wife’s Pinterest board from our wedding when I arrived at their Wedding & Event Decor showroom located at 23 Danbury Road in Ridgefield. Enza Events handles everything from Wedding Design, Floral Decor, Bar & Bat Mitzvah design, Event Decor, Furniture Rentals, Specialty Linens and much more. Briana owns Pretty in Print which focuses more on printed materials and event branding. Items she offers include invitations, menus, posters, logos, escort cards, signage, and table numbers...all which are custom designed to match the event. She understands that people want the perfect invitation for their event and don’t want to settle for the stock options others offer. Wedding invitations in CT are a big deal! What made you want to go into the Event Decor and Invitation Design Business? Enza and Briana both worked for a big event design company in Westchester and decided to leave to fuel their creative juices. Their showroom in Ridgefield is new, but they’ve both been in the wedding planning, decor, and invitation business for 20 years. Enza Events doesn’t just do wedding design and décor; Enza works with a lot of bar and bat mitzvah clients to design the perfect event for their families. One of the most popular services they provide is branding, because no one settles for the average bar or bat mitzvah.
If a customer was to choose between Enza Events & Pretty in Print or three other companies in the Wedding Design Niche – why choose yours? Our event design & custom stationery business is completely personalized. We work in collaboration with our clients to discuss their vision so that we can make it a reality. The 100% customization is really what sets us apart from the competition. We have the resources to do huge events with a custom boutique feel while still dealing with our customers one on one. Where would you like to see Enza Events and Pretty in Print in 6 months? We’d like to have a production space up and running in about 6 months. We do big events, and having a second space to house everything nearby would be ideal. We’re working to grow both of our businesses, but want to maintain our personal touch. We limit the amount of events we take in to make sure our clients receive the highest quality. Wrapping things up with Enza Events & Pretty in Print of Ridgefield CT If my wife was doing this interview, she’d be here for 6 hours! Their showroom is like a Pinterest board where all things wedding come to life. They’ve created such a beautiful environment with so much to see and experience. I was impressed with both Enza and Briana on how quickly they were able to get on their feet after leaving a big event décor company. They are both busy professionals, and take what they do to the next level.

What’s the toughest thing about having a business in Danbury?Getting the WORD OUT! People are still very unaware of what we do here. We’re located right in the Stop and Shop Plaza on Newtown Road in Danbury, but people just don’t know exactly what the European Wax Center does. As we continue our marketing efforts, the word is definitely spreading about our wonderful Wax Service! Besides offering a comfort specific wax blend, a 4 step waxing process, and lower rates, we also have the ambiance of the Wax Center. Our staff is friendly, welcoming, and are all certified aestheticians. Finishing things up with the European Wax Center of DanburyI was offered a free wax for helping the European Wax Center out with a feature on The Danbury Review, and I gladly obliged. I got a full back wax which may be too much information, but there was a significant pain difference between them and the other places I’ve been in Danbury CT. They did a great exfoliation beforehand, and gave me some great tips for skin care between waxes. I’ll definitely be heading back to the European Wax Center of Danbury.

Looking for more than just iPhone Repair in Brookfield?I met with David Ruhs, owner of Brookfield CT’s uBreakiFix location. uBreakiFix is a repair everything franchise dedicated to changing the perspective that people have on throwing away their expensive electronics, buying new ones, and then repeating this vicious cycle that is continuing to fill up landfills throughout the country. In Brookfield uBreakiFix literally fixes everything under the sun. They fix electronics in Brookfield from PS4s, XBOXs, Computers, TVs, iPhones, Androids, iPads, Tablets, and many more electronics. When I was invited into their back office I noticed a ton of different electronics being repaired including a 70 inch TV, a mini ATV, a control panel for a snowplow, the console for a lexus, and they even take care of drones. What was the toughest thing about opening a cell phone repair shop in Brookfield CT? Trying to get people to understand the type of services we offer. We don’t just fix phones on tablets and screens, but instead we fix everything with a power button. uBreakiFix of Brookfield also has the exclusive right to fix the new Google Pixel phone, and when the Google Pixel is repaired at a uBreakiFix location then the warrenty stays intact. Looking for Cell Phone Repair in Danbury?I met with Ricky Espinal of MobiFix.Repair, a phone repair business that comes to your home in Danbury. MobiFix repairs iPhones, Androids, iPads, and all other smart phones or tablets. Their quality is just as good, if not better quality than other, more well-known cell phone repair shops in Danbury, Connecticut. In addition to providing quality phone repair service in Danbury, MobiFix also provides the excellent customer service. By the time you drive to the mall, wait in line at the phone repair kiosk, wait for the repair to be done, and then drive home… You could have had MobiFix at your home, a phone repaired, and have played 25 minutes of Candy Crush or Pokemon go – whatever you’re into. Not to mention the money you’ll have saved on your smart phone repair. MobiFix doesn’t have expensive overhead that kiosks, and phone repair shops in the Danbury Mall do. What made you want to get into the Mobile Phone Repair Business in Danbury?
"I’d also like to be able to service the other CT areas such as Brookfield, New Fairfield, Bethel, and Ridgefield with additional vans. It’ll definitely be difficult to find others with the same passion as myself, but I’m very optimistic," says Ricky. If a customer was to choose between your iphone repair business, and three others just like it in Danbury CT… Why choose yours? “I’m a local business in Danbury. I’m not cellaris, the sprint store, or a random cell phone repair kiosk. I could be making 10x a much at my old job, but I’m building my phone repair business because it’s a passion of mine. You’ll notice that passion in my quality repairs, and great customer service." Wrapping things up with MobiFix Repair of Danbury ConnecticutI was really impressed with Ricky. It’s always difficult to be a solopreneur but he really cares about his customers, and there is a need for mobile cell phone repair in Danbury.
Thinking about getting a Pool for Next Summer?I met with Jim Jr of L&J Pools located in Bethel, Connecticut. L&J Pools has an interesting history; Jim Sr. started his construction business in 1975, where he built many subdivisions, roads, foundations for houses and more. After Jim Sr. built his own house he decided he wanted to get a pool, and so he built himself a pool. Jim’s friends and family were so impressed and in awe of his custom built concrete wall, vinyl liner pool that he was inspired and driven to get into the pool business. Jim Sr. started his custom pool building business out of his garage in Redding, CT in 1984. And after years of success and growth Jim Sr moved his business from his garage to a commercial building with a showroom and concrete plant in Bethel, CT. L&J Pools is still family owned and operated, Jim Sr. along with his wife and 3 children and more employees, work together to provide quality custom pools throughout Connecticut. Their pool company has many satisfied pool owners in Danbury, New Fairfield, Ridgefield, Brookfield and other areas of CT. Besides the Pool Building Business do you do anything else?L&J Pools is much more than just a vinyl liner and gunite pool building company. Jim Sr. got into the pool business when new construction sales where slowing down. Also when he had received great feedback from his friends and family after building his own inground pool, weighed in his decision. In 1987 he started a Heating Oil company to accompany the Pool business since the pool company is seasonal. His Heating Oil Company would be able to keep his guys busy in the off season. Fiorilla Heating Oil does automatic deliveries throughout Fairfield County and the lower half of Litchfield County. Whats the toughest thing about owning a Inground Pool Building Business in 2016?Time is always difficult to manage says Jim Jr. “You’re basically married to the business, you’re here, and every single thing falls on your shoulders to make it all run smoothly. You’re the first one here, and the last one to leave. The favorite part of my day is getting home to my family.” Jim Jr. lives locally, and is the father to three little girls. “Another thing that our pool company needs to deal with is the constant fees, licenses, and high requirements just to clean a pool.” Jim proceeded to explain everything to me about the SP-1, SPB licenses needed to run a successful pool company, but it was too overwhelming for me to follow. If a Customer was looking to get a Custom Pool Built, and was to choose between your Pool Company, and three others like it - Why Choose L&J Pools?Jim Jr. explains, “We build the pool, patio, fencing, etc., from the start of your project to the finished product and everything in between, everything is done in house. We mix our own concrete so we don’t have to rely on any one. On top of that my father, Jim Sr. is a licensed septic installer so he can relocate your septic tank if required. Most of the pool guys in Danbury and Bethel just build vinyl liner pools. We of course build vinyl liner pools as well, but we also build custom gunite pools. A gunite pool is a commercial grade swimming pool, and it is top of the line. Vinyl liners are kit pools, and have specific dimensions. Our customers love our gunite pools because they are completely customizable. We make swimming pools to fit our customer’s individual needs.”
Besides listening to information about pool licensing my interview with Jim Jr. was very interesting and had a lot of information to offer. I thought it was great that they created another company (Fiorilla Heating Oil) on top of the Pool Company to provide their seasonal employees with work during the off season, which shows great character. I know where I’ll be going to get a pool…. Eventually! Looking for New Things To Do in Danbury?I met with Kris the owner of Escape 101, a new addition to the Danbury community. Growing up in Bethel, Kris always had a serious lack of things to do. You could either go to the mall, the movies or sit home and play video games. Escape 101 provides a fresh new look at entertainment for all ages. You have exactly 60 minutes to get out of the locked room. Your team will need to solve puzzles to earn keys or combinations to further your escape. Escaping from the rooms takes serious team work. They have three rooms available with a fourth in production. For those like myself with a competitive mindset they have two of the same room for head to head battles. What made you want to start Escape 101 in Danbury?“I spend a lot of my time in NYC, and love their escape room scene. There wasn’t anything like this in Danbury or even this part of Connecticut.” explains Kris. The father of one of the kids who’s trying to solve the Widow’s Room with their friends interjects to explain how great it is to have somewhere that his daughter is excited to go. On top of having fun on a Saturday afternoon she is able to learn teamwork develop problem solving skills. You've got a night off, why choose Escape 101?Escape 101 is something entirely new to do in Danbury. The environment is friendly, welcoming, and we have an all-star staff that makes the whole escape experience fun and challenging. In 6 months from now we’re looking to be a big part of the Danbury community. We’re looking to establish Escape 101 as a great opportunity for team building and networking. We’re constantly investing in new technology, new games, and developing new escape rooms. The Danbury Community and Escape 101Kris was enthusiastic about the opportunity for Escape 101 to become part of the Danbury Community. I definitely agree with him that there is nothing else like it in Danbury or the surrounding Connecticut area. I’ll have to get a few friends together to do the head to head Escape Room soon!
Need a Personal Trainer in New Fairfield?I met with Adrienne Corrigan of ARC Fitness, LLC in New Fairfield. Having drove past her sign at the intersection of Route 37 and Sawmill Road many times this was a great opportunity to get to know what ARC Fitness was all about. Adrienne opened up ARC Fitness in 2015 after eight years of working locally as a trainer. Adrienne started ARC Fitness, LLC because she has a passion for helping people. She’s a big fan of fixing things, and in this case its people's lives. Improving quality of life is a primary focus for Adrienne. Everything from being able to comfortably get on and off the floor, to being able to walk on uneven terrain, climb stairs and live an active lifestyle. Any limitations that prevent her clients from fully enjoying their lives becomes a primary goal. Adrienne evaluates current movement patterns, strengthens the muscles involved in each of those processes, and then works to refine the movements in a way that optimizes the results while placing less stress on the involved joints. Most of ARC Fitness’s clients are 50-70 years old, and she designs a personal program for each one of them. When working with her clients, Adrienne always incorporates their lifestyle and diet into their programs. It's important that the workouts have a real life benefit. As far as diet goes, she works with her client's current diet and refines it for a better nutritional impact. She educates her clients on the benefits of clean eating, and the impact poor nutrition plays on their goals. In the end, it's up to the clients to make the good choices, at least they are now armed with the knowledge behind the nutrition. What was the Hardest thing about opening up your Personal Training Studio in New Fairfield? After three minutes of pondering this question, Adrienne said “Nothing! It was like living a dream! I now had the opportunity to create a studio to exactly fit my needs.” ARC Fitness is a perfect personal training solution for anyone who does not feel comfortable in a public gym. The studio is very private and clean & the equipment is excellent. My Personal Training Studio in New Fairfield was designed to accommodate clients with diverse physical needs and limitations. It is wonderful for clients who require customized programs, either due to previous injury or deconditioning from sedentary lifestyle factors. The fitness equipment is also fabulous for clients who are already active and fit, as they can increase their current fitness levels through emphasis on functional personal training and core stabilization. She is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, and also holds a Corrective Exercise Specialist Certification, Senior Fitness Certification, and Women’s Fitness Certification. That’s a ton of Personal Training Certifications! No wonder location doctors and chiropractors from New Fairfield & Danbury regularly refer her new clients. What’s the Toughest part of having a Personal Training Business in New Fairfield?Adrienne has kept her rates reasonable, with a goal of being able to reach more people. Total body workouts that are safe and effective can be purchased for as little as $40/hour. These sessions combine both personal training and cross-training cardio. If someone considering Personal Training was to choose between your Personal Training Studio and three others just like it – why should they choose ARC Fitness?Adrienne explains “If you've been searching for a clean, private workout experience, you've found it at ARC Fitness... Training at ARC Fitness is discrete and personalized, right down to the music selection. There is no other Personal Training Studio in New Fairfield that is as private as ARC Fitness. My interview with Adrienne Corrigan, the owner of ARC Fitness, LLC in New Fairfield was a special one. She's got a very private personal training studio, and is clearly very committed to providing the best personal training environment for her clients, plus she's totally ripped. Owner: Adrienne Corrigan Year Established: 2015 Phone: (203) 994-1462 Need Custom Graphic Design in CT?I met with “Man-u-iLL” at his Graphic Printing Studio on Main Street in Danbury. From the outside looking in you’d think it was just a T-Shirt, Sign, and Graphic Design Shop. You’d never know there was a complete studio in back or that they offer website design, commercials, voice overs and everything related music and mixing. iLL Ink was started by Josh, aka Man-u-iLL a hip hop artist because he needed something that could channel his creativeness while paying the bills. ill Ink started on August 17th of 2011, and with Man-u-iLL’s strong following in the hip hop world his shop as really taken off. As his tagline explains we’re “Taking the Market off the Corner, and Cornering the Market.” He has a soft spot for emerging artists, and offers every service that a business or artist needs to promote themselves in the Danbury Area and beyond. He is esteemed by his followers for making such a big power move, and opening up his own business. Man-u-iLL works with many different local businesses in Danbury doing custom T-shirts, Signs and even car advertising. What was the Hardest thing about opening up Ill Ink?“There was definitely a learning curve when I first opened up,” explains Man-u-iLL. He talked about how he needed to channel his creativity into graphics for different businesses from Landscapers to Personal Trainers. iLL ink does everything including T-shirts, Business Cards, Signs, Banners, Websites. He explains that juggling his hip hop career owning a business was very difficult in the beginning. He’s got a fully stocked recording studio back that’d he’d love to spend all day in, but he does more than just rap in this recording studio. He actually went to school for 12 months for music engineering, and is proficient in commercials, voice overs and music mixing. If your customer was to choose between iLL iNK, and three other Graphic Printing Studios - why choose yours?“People come to iLL iNK for a couple reasons,” explains Man-u-iLL. “First, we’ve got the best customer service, it’s like southern hospitality here – you get treated right. Second, people come to iLL iNK because I make things really easy for them, and half the time they don’t even know what they want. Choosing between silk screen or thermal transfer sounds like a hard choice to make, but I make things easily understandable. Lastly, people come to Ill Ink for the innovation. I’ve got a baby on the way, and need to pay the bills so I can’t hang in the studio every day. That built up creativity that’s been dormant really comes out in our products, and people love it,” says Man-u-iLL. My interview with Man-u-iLL was a real eye opener. Driving by iLL iNK on Main Street in Danbury, you can tell it’s got some flavor, but stepping in back blew my mind. From the recording studio, to the intricate designs, to the music behind it all – iLL iNK is a hidden gem in Danbury. Jim had been running wires and putting in plugs & switches with his father since an early age. He went to Abbot Tech, and wanted to focus on being an electrical engineer so he went into the Army for the college fund. Jim was in the army for 8 years and served in the Gulf War. Jim came back home after the war, and worked for a few local businesses. Before long he felt he needed do better by his customers, and opened up J&J Clap Electric with his father Joel Clap who had been working the trade since 1972. Opening up a business didn't intimidate this combat vet even the slightest bit. As Jim says "I knew no matter what that I was going to do the right job by my customers, and that would pay off." Paying off it did - Jim's business grows through his referrals alone. J&J Clap opened the business in 1997, and it was father & son working side by side until March 2000 when Joel passed away. Jim continues to honor the fine tradition of top quality work with superior customer service which was the hallmark of his father. Nowadays J&J Clap Electric's reputation for outstanding residential and commercial electrical work is known throughout Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven counties in CT as well as the Westchester & Putnam counties in NY. He proudly serves the above areas while employing 5 licensed electricians. Why Choose J&J Clap Electric? One of the many reasons to choose J&J Clap Electric is because Jim is hands on everyday. He gets a ton of great feedback from customers about how they enjoy seeing him on the job day in and day out. As Jim says "working 80 hours a week keeps me young." I asked Jim if he was to start over from Day 1, what he would do differently... Jim responded "I wouldn't have waited so long to go into my own business. The electrical trade needs good qualified electricians. I've gotten so much great feedback from our customers because we take care of their homes like its our own. Our electricians show up to your home clean shaven, without the stench of cigarettes and with a pair of booties in hand. Keeping customer's homes tidy while doing the job, and making sure to clean up when the job is done is part of the J&J Clap Electric service standards. Where will J&J Clap be in the next 6 months?Jim wants everything done perfect. His daughter has a more unfavorable name for his need for perfection, but after seeing his testimonials its easy to tell his customers love him for it. Jim wants to maintain his Electrical business because he doesn't want to sacrifice quality for quantity. After interviewing Jim Clap, owner of J & J Clap Electric Contractors I was impressed with his level of customer service. He let me know that he breaks down each bill for his customers so they can see exactly what their being charged. On top of that he handles all paperwork himself, and returns every call each night. Owner: Jim Clap Year Established: 1997 Website: JandJClapElectric.com Phone Number: (203) 791-9773 Need a Plumber in Danbury?I met up with Mike at his office and we talked about his company, Mike Barret Plumbing & Heating LLC. We discussed the establishment of his Plumbing Company, and the hardest parts about owning a business. One of the of the toughest parts of having a business in 2016, he says, is competing against guys who are not licensed and insured. “Unfortunately it happens a lot, guys will pay other guys to borrow their licenses to get the job, and the customer will think their getting a great deal.” We talked about how he’s grateful for the small team of plumbers he has working for him. They both have families in the Danbury / New Milford area. Mike himself has twins that are four years old. Both plumbers working for him understand the need for delivering the best service to their customers. Mike got his start after graduating from Henry Abbot Tech, and doing his apprenticeship with M&M Plumbing. He explained that it was tough opening a business because advertising in the phonebook was extremely expensive. Phonebooks are long extinct, and the internet has taken over. Owning a Plumbing Business in 2016Mike Barret Plumbing & Heating has built up 247 5 star reviews on Angie’s List, but Angie’s List recently changed up their listing format. Now when you do a search in Angie’s List, the companies that come up first are the ones paying the most for advertising instead of the ones with the best reputation. On the flip-side, Mike explains “the internet will can destroy a business rather quickly. If you don’t do a nice job or treat people fairly then you’ll rack up a handful of bad reviews that can destroy your business.” When talking about whether or not he wanted to grow his business he expressed the need to stay small in order to provide the best service to his customers. Why Choose Mike Barret Plumbing & Heating LLC?To wrap things up I asked - if a customer was to choose between Mike Barret Plumbing & Heating LLC and three others just like it, why should they choose yours? Mike explains that “because I’m in touch with every customer regardless if I’m on site or not. We stand behind our work completely – no questions asked. On top of that we don’t have a lot of overhead so we’re able to keep our prices down.” After interviewing Mike Barret, owner of Mike Barret Plumbing & Heating LLC it was easy to notice that we was a real family man who cares a ton about business, and will provide nothing but the best plumbing service in the Danbury area. Owner: Mike Barret Year Established: 2001 Website: BarretPlumbing.biz Phone Number: (203) 778-3964 Want to keep your ride looking it's best?Akrham Shine’s rise to the top all started with the a Mustang. Owner, Kevin Awalt was given a Mustang at the age of 15 by his father. At first he just wanted to keep his ride looking great. Throughout High School his interest grew, and he was doing detailing jobs for friends & family. During College he was the local go to guy for keeping your ride looking it’s best. The years went by only for Kevin to get better at his trade. In 2008 he opened up a place in Danbury, but more recently in March 2015 he opened up Arkham Shine (interviewed by The Danbury Review). Arkham Shine handles all aspects of Auto Detailing including window tinting, paint protection film, ceramic coating, scratch repair and paint touchups. Kevin’s business sees a wide variety of different customers from dads who want to keep the family Jeep looking its best to higher end clients who want to protect their new Maserati with paint protection film. Owning a Small Business in 2016Kevin states that the toughest thing about opening was getting the word out. He explains that often Auto Detailing doesn’t have the best name recognition. There seems to be a lot of amateurs out there claiming their auto detailers, but they don’t have a professional background. Kevin’s been Auto Detailing for 20 years, and based on the before & after pictures I saw I’d say he really knows his stuff. In 2016 the toughest part of having a business is the fact that you’re always working. The connectivity of modern technology has extended the 9-5 work day and had a significant impact on work/life balance. In business you can never really clock out. He relies on the effectiveness of the internet including Google rankings, Facebook and Instagram. Its 2016 and people aren’t opening up the phone book anymore. The only way new customers will find you is through your internet presence. After talking with Kevin Awalt, owner of Arkham Shine it is readily apparent that they are one of the leaders in the auto detailing business. They are one of the only auto detailers in Connecticut that guarantee their results.
